About the Role

The Eye Care Specialist will assist ophthalmologists and optometrists in preparing patients for appointments by taking medical and ocular histories, performing standard entrance tests, visual acuity and refraction, and slit lamp examinations of the anterior segment. The ideal candidate will also provide support to the Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Center and may assist with minor surgical procedures, including laser treatments.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for ophthalmologic or optometric examination by obtaining ocular and medical history and accurately entering the information into the electronic medical record.
  • Perform standard entrance tests, including lensometry, refraction, and visual acuity.
  • Examine pupil responses, extraocular muscle movements, confrontational fields, and Amsler grid testing.
  • Determine and recommend further testing based on examination findings.
  • Perform specialized testing as ordered by the provider, such as color vision testing, contrast sensitivity testing, and stereo vision testing.
  • Perform visual field testing using various modalities.
  • Assist with minor in-office surgical procedures or lasers.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working in an ophthalmic practice.
  • JCAHPO certification at the level of Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) is preferred and expected within 3 years of hire.
  • Clinical Trial Certification in refraction, optical coherence tomography, and ophthalmic photography is expected within the first year of hire.
