Job Summary

At CommonSpirit Health, we are committed to building healthy communities and advocating for those who are poor and vulnerable. As a Medical Assistant, you will play a vital role in delivering patient care that promotes the safety and wellbeing of all patients.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the health care provider, you will be responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Key duties include:

  • Performing general patient care by following established standards and procedures.
  • Greeting and preparing patients for the health care provider.
  • Obtaining and recording vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, drug allergies, and current medications and presenting problem.
  • May be required to draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • May administer ordered medications and/or vaccines via oral, injection, topically, rectal, ophthalmic, and/or inhalant administration.
  • May perform routine tests, including EKGs.
  • Scheduling patients for diagnostic testing and following up to ensure completion of testing.
  • Communicating with patient regarding test results and plan of care by phone or mail as directed by physician.
  • Preparing, cleaning and sterilizing instruments and maintaining equipment; keeping patient exam rooms stocked, clean and orderly; disposing of contaminated items according to protocol.
  • Documenting patient plan(s) of care, tests and examination results in the medical record as directed by the provider.
  • Escalating non-routine issues, questions and/or concerns to the practice manager or healthcare provider(s).
  • Ensuring safety checklists/quality controls are completed as required.
  • Providing for patient safety and protection of patient privacy rights.

Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Care Life Support (ACLS) is also required. Additionally, you must have the ability to perform EKGs, draw blood and administer injections, effectively communicate with staff and patients, and demonstrate sound judgment and composure in questionable or emergency situations.
