Job Title: Youth Engagement Specialist

At Maryland Coalition of Families, we are seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to join our team as a Youth Engagement Specialist. This is an excellent opportunity for recent high school and college graduates or trade school students to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young people and their families.

Founded in 1999, Maryland Coalition of Families is a statewide nonprofit organization with a central office in Columbia, Md., and staff located in communities throughout the state. Our mission is to connect, support, and empower Maryland's families by providing one-to-one support to parents and caregivers of young people with mental health issues and to any loved one who cares for someone with a substance use or gambling issue.

Job Summary

The Youth Engagement Specialist will serve as a leader for youth and young-adult voice in Maryland, and is a member of Taking Flight, MCF's statewide Youth and Young Adult Council for individuals with experience in one or more child-serving systems in Maryland: Mental Health, Substance Use, DJS, Foster Care, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Serves on and supports a statewide Youth Advisory Board and coordinates with other youth initiatives, including Youth MOVE, Healthy Transitions, On Our Own, and other groups that may be identified.
  • Speaks on panels about lived experience; modeling appropriate, safe, and effective ways to share stories.
  • Serves on committees and supports young people to serve on committees representing the young adult perspective in order to impact and improve youth-serving systems.
  • Contributes creative ideas and popular trends into Taking Flight's outreach and training to raise awareness around youth and young adult issues and interests in the behavioral health field, utilizing social media and other applications where appropriate.
  • Assist in planning and implementing various youth activities throughout the year, such as annual young adult retreats and youth panels.
  • Attends bi-monthly Taking Flight meetings and other meetings as requested.
  • Attends relevant trainings and conferences to stay abreast of issues related to youth and young adults in relation to behavioral health needs.

Requirements

  • Lived experience accessing mental health/behavioral health services is required.
  • Must live in Prince George's County.
  • Ability to join youth advocacy boards and committees.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and communicate effectively with a remote supervisor.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and/or weekends as needed.
  • Ability to work with youth and young adults from diverse cultural, religious, racial and economic backgrounds, as well as LGBTQIA+ youth and young adults.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with social media and ability to adhere to Taking Flight's guidelines pertaining to usage in promotion, outreach and education.
  • Ability to create and maintain positive and professional relationships with partners.
  • Current Maryland driver's license and access to own vehicle; in-state travel required for various meetings/events across the state and to the MCF office in Columbia.
  • Successful completion of a background check is required for all MCF employees.

Benefits

Full-time/40 hours per week. Flexible work schedule. Salary: $18.00 per hour. MCF provides equipment, mileage reimbursement, and paid training. Full benefits include generous paid time off (2-Weeks Vacation, 2-Weeks Sick leave, 3-Personal days, 2-Floating holidays, 11-Holidays per year), health plans, dental, vision, life insurance, FSA, long-term disability, 401(k), and EAP.
