About the Job

We are seeking a highly skilled Public Safety Dispatcher to join our team at Vets Hired. As a Public Safety Dispatcher, you will be responsible for dispatching emergency and non-emergency police personnel in response to calls for service. You will receive information, questions, and requests for service, determine the nature and priority of calls, and dispatch appropriate units for response.

Key Responsibilities

  • Dispatch emergency and non-emergency police personnel in response to calls for service
  • Receive information, questions, and requests for service
  • Determine the nature and priority of calls and dispatch appropriate units for response
  • Handle inquiries involving public emergencies and recognize sensitive information
  • Provide information to field units, other agencies, and the public
  • Alert other agencies and coordinate mutual response radio traffic and information distribution
  • Operate computer-aided dispatch systems and other telecommunications devices
  • Perform routine equipment testing, upkeep, and maintenance
  • Operate computer equipment using designated systems and programs
  • Send, receive, and route law enforcement reports, warrants, and other materials
  • Review and record case information and maintain logs and records

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school
  • Two years of responsible full-time work experience involving public contact, computer usage, and/or heavy telephone traffic
  • Experience in public safety or dealing with stressful, multi-task oriented situations is highly desirable
  • Ability to obtain a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Public Safety Dispatcher Certificate within one year of employment
  • Willingness and/or ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends
  • Ability to work on an on-call basis and work irregular duty assignments
  • Ability to work outside in inclement weather and work under undesirable and hazardous conditions
  • Ability to conform to department grooming standards and pass a background investigation
  • Ability to work alone and attend educational sessions as required

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of organization and functions of a municipal law enforcement agency
  • Modern office practices and procedures
  • Application of modern computer technology, including designated operating programs and software
  • Ability to effectively coordinate the work of safety enforcement personnel in the field
  • Ability to assess and prioritize emergency situations
  • Ability to make rapid and sound independent judgments in stressful emergency situations
  • Ability to perform clerical work and basic mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy
  • Ability to operate computer equipment, a variety of office equipment, and specialized police department equipment
  • Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain various codes, regulations, manuals, maps, etc.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate records
  • Ability to prepare reports and communicate effectively
  • Ability to act with resourcefulness, courtesy, and initiative
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public
