Exciting Opportunities in Defensive Systems Engineering

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking dedicated problem solvers to help us tackle challenging technical problems while improving the defensive capability of our Navy's ships. We focus on the command and control of kinetic and nonkinetic weapon systems and effectors to enable an optimal, layered defensive web.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create sophisticated simulations of Naval capabilities and adversarial threat systems, paired with machine learning technologies, to develop robust solutions to transform systemic weaknesses into strengths.
  • Develop data analytic and statistical tools to analyze complex systems and root cause performance issues.
  • Assist in the development, test, and analysis of innovative advancements to our command and control systems.
  • Implement and refine novel algorithms that increase the performance of shipboard defensive systems.
  • Perform early research into promising technologies that lead to improving our Navy's ability to maintain superior situational awareness in the fog of war, identify blatant and subtle hostile actions, and dynamically allocate limited resources in a changing battlefield.
  • Effectively communicate technical recommendations to APL leadership, government sponsors, and the engineering community.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering (e.g., Electrical, Systems, Mechanical, Aerospace), Math, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Technical experience as demonstrated in at least one internship, research experience, or other similar opportunity.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with either C++ or Python.
  • Experience creating object-oriented software.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain Top Secret level clearance.
