The Specimen Collector is responsible for accurately collecting and processing patient samples for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This role requires adherence to professional standards, established policies and procedures, and applicable federal, state, and/or accrediting requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Greet patients with excellent customer service skills and verify their identity using industry-standard techniques.
- Process samples for venipuncture, molecular, urine, and oral fluid drug screening according to STONE Diagnostics collection guidelines.
- Maintain specimen integrity by following department procedures and OSHA standards.
- Prepare samples for shipping according to STONE Clinical Laboratories, DOT, and IATA requirements.
- Work with the laboratory computer system to input patient demographics, insurance, and test ordering information.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment and comply with legal regulations.
- High-school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read and write English above a high school level.
- Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Good problem-solving and multitasking skills.
- Ability to work autonomously.
- 1 year of specimen collection experience.
- Preferred: 3 years of specimen collection experience.
- Multi-site Physician Group Practice experience is a plus.
This position requires frequent standing, sitting, bending, reaching, grasping, and fingering. May be exposed to noise, dirt, dust, fumes, and loud noises. Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases, including HIV and other bloodborne pathogens. This position works in an indoor environment dealing with the public.
Physical Requirements- Ability to work under stress and in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to bend, stoop, twist, and work with a computer.
- Visual requirements: ability to make visual color determinations, requires constant reading and close-up work.
- Ability to operate standard office machines, computers, telephones, etc.
- Hearing/talking requirements: ability to hear normal speech and faint sounds; ability to communicate via telephone.
- Ability to lift 20 pounds.
