Job Summary

As a Phlebotomist with Advocate Health, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and quality of patient care. Your primary responsibility will be to collect and process medical specimens for laboratory testing. This includes verifying patient identification, assessing patient reactions to specimen procurement, and performing venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures according to established protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Verify patient identification to ensure accuracy and safety of specimen collection
  • Assess patient reactions to specimen procurement and take appropriate action if necessary
  • Perform venipuncture and collect other specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocols
  • Obtain medical assistance when judged necessary and ensure completion of specimen collection functions according to protocol
  • Resolve specimen identification and/or requisition problems and clarify requests
  • Answer and screen telephone calls, respond to additional specimen procurement requests via pager or other means, and order and verify test requests
  • Document appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement according to established protocol and review various pending and management reports
  • Provide assistance in support of billing and other business functions and instruct employees and students in phlebotomy and data entry

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; 1 year of phlebotomy experience preferred
  • Basic computer skills, including experience using computer software applications, keyboarding and typing skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, good listening skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare employees
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and bend the majority of the workday, occasionally lift up to 50 lbs, and be exposed to human blood and body fluids

Work Environment

As a Phlebotomist with Advocate Health, you will work in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment, interacting with patients, physicians, and other healthcare employees. You will be required to wear appropriate lab coats, gloves, gowns, and eye and face protection as needed.
