Boston Children’s Hospital Ophthalmic Technician Role

As an Ophthalmic Technician at Boston Children’s Hospital, you will play a vital role in the delivery of high-quality eye care services to our patients. Your responsibilities will include preparing clinical rooms, ordering supplies, stocking equipment, and ensuring proper storage. You will also work within our system to deliver and pick up supplies as needed, requiring visits to other departments.

Key Responsibilities
• Perform clinical room preparation and supply ordering as needed
• Stock equipment and medication, and ensure proper storage
• Work within BCH system to deliver/pick up supplies as needed
• Visit other departments as required
• Assist with procedures as needed
• Ensure patient flow and pertinent documents for specified clinical areas are prepared, organized, and communicated effectively, efficiently, and with accuracy
• Assist department with regulatory compliance, including Joint Commission
• Gather quotes for equipment purchases and arrange equipment repairs
• Take external, slit lamp, and ocular fundus photographs, and edit and upload photos to patient medical records
• Measure and record visual fields with automated perimeter
• Instill eye drops as directed by ophthalmologist/optometrist
• Measure intraocular pressures
• Scan and organize computerized patient records/images for Ophthalmology Program and phone/scheduling support and other administrative duties within the program
• Assist with contact lens insertion/removal sessions and contact lens cleaning/inventory, location-specific

Requirements
• High School Diploma/GED required
• Current registration as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA certification) preferred
• Experience in a clinical or science-related field preferred
• Effective communication skills to deal with clinicians, administrative staff, and families/young patients
• Well-developed writing skills
• Keen organizational skills to support a medical office and balance assigned tasks and competing responsibilities in a clinical ophthalmologic setting
• Computer and research skills for tasks of word processing and data coordination
