We are seeking a skilled Shipyard Welder to join our team in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As a Shipyard Welder, you will be responsible for leading welding activities for structure, equipment, and other furnishings on commercial vessels under the supervision of a Welding Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities- Read blueprints and drawings to plan layout and procedures
- Determine the appropriate equipment or methods based on requirements
- Select and follow the appropriate welding procedure for the task
- Carry out nondestructive weld inspections such as air lancing and vacuum boxing
- Set up components for welding according to specifications
- Operate angle grinders with guard to prepare parts for welding
- Weld aluminum, steel, stainless steel, copper nickel, and other metals
- Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions
- Use various types of welding equipment and techniques
- Weld vessel superstructure, tanks, fuel tanks, furnishings, and equipment
- Use flame, plasma arc, and other cutting processes to trim parts before welding
- Prepare surfaces of material to be welded
- Set up preheating and stress relieving equipment
- Inspect joint geometry and operate portable grinding and finishing equipment
- Align components using calipers, rulers, etc. and clamp pieces
- Test and inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws
- May be assigned as hot work fire watch as needed
- Able to work in confined spaces as required and aloft from heights as needed
- Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety
- Attention to detail: Must perform all tasks in compliance with regulatory agency standards
- Assists with general operations of the yard, including removal of vessels from water using movable lift crane
- Follow prescribed safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe, clean work area
- Follows hot work permit procedures
- Moves equipment and materials to and from jobsite
- Able to work cooperatively with other department personnel
- Conduct yourself with a positive and contagious attitude for others to emulate
- Keep the Master Welder and others informed about project status and issues that may impact client relations
- Holds yourself and all employees accountable to the Environmental, Safety and Quality Respect and SMS systems of the organization
- Travel to project sites within the US and internationally as needed
- Available for day or night shifts, depending on project requirements
- 1+ years' experience operating as a commercial welder, marine experience preferred
- OSHA 10-hour certification preferred
- Must be able to pass internal welding tests
- Experience working with aluminum preferred
- Current and valid certification a plus
- Skilled in reading blueprints, schematics, and written reference material
- Experience working in a team environment
- Knowledge of construction site best practices and safety procedures
- Must be able to climb up and down ladders and gangways, work aloft while wearing fall prevention equipment
- Ability to travel to jobs at different sites
- Must thrive in a fast-paced environment
