Histology Specialist

Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Histology Specialist to join our team at Partners Healthcare. In this role, you will be responsible for handling and preparing research tissue for microscopic analysis, ensuring diagnostic viability of all specimens received.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Maintain diagnostic viability of all specimens received and ensure correct identity of all materials.
2. Embed routine tissue in paraffin, orienting according to tissue type, and record on grossing sheets the number of samples received.
3. Section paraffin blocks of routine tissue using a microtome, mount paraffin section on microscopic slide, and verify match of request/identifying number.
4. Perform H&E and routine special staining of paraffin embedded tissue according to instructions on requisition paperwork.
5. Coverslip prepared slides manually or utilize automated coverslipping systems and record in laboratory logbooks all slides and stains prepared.
6. Organize slides and blocks for return to submitting researchers according to requisition paperwork and worksheets.
7. Document daily QA/QC charts for all laboratory equipment.
8. Identify problems and bring to the attention of more senior laboratory staff and troubleshoot under supervision.
9. Assist in the orienting and training of new laboratory staff.
10. Prepare and maintain working solutions for routine H&E staining on automatic stainers and routine special stains.
11. Maintain individual microtome and other laboratory equipment in proper working order, following laboratory safety protocols.
12. Participate in continuing education/in-service training sessions sponsored by the department.

Requirements and Qualifications:

This role requires a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of a formal training program in histology or a related field. Previous experience in a laboratory setting is preferred. Excellent communication and organizational skills are necessary for success in this position.
